FAQ's (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

1. What do I need to bring with me?

Your provisional driving licence and a willingness to learn.

2. What happens on the first lesson?

Your instructor will describe all of the car controls to you and show you the important safety checks you will need to make every time you get into the car. Your instructor will then teach you how to move and (more importantly) how to stop the car and introduce you to the 'Mirror Signal Manoeuvre' routine. All lessons will be structured according to the individuals' ability. You will never be asked to perform an action beyond your capabilities.

3. How long does each lesson last?

A basic lesson is one full hour. You may, if you wish, book 90 minutes or two hour sessions and prices will be pro rata.

4. Is the car fitted with dual controls?

Yes

5. What does the theory test involve?

Click on the 'legislation' button.

6. Can you help with my studying for the theory test?

As well as all the necessary safety features built into the car there is also an onboard video camera to record your lessons. You can take the video tape away with you to study between lessons. This can assist with hazard recognition. But at the end of the day you will need to put in the study time in order to be successful.

7. How many lesson will I need to take?

This will depend on the individual. Some people learn quicker than others. The DSA suggest it will require approximately 40 lessons with an approved instructor plus as much private practice as you can get but a number of customers of Astcote Driving chool have been successful with less than this.

8. Do you provide intensive courses?

No. Astcote Driving School does not advocate such intensive training. There is evidence that prolonged periods of intensive training are not conducive to learning. In our view, it would be preferrable to undertake a 'double lesson' of two hours duration. This gives the driver an opportunity to settle into the lesson whilst benefitting from "hands on" driving experience.
