  theory tests

The test to become a qualified driver is in two parts:-

  • The theory and hazard perception test

  • The practical test (or test of your ability to drive a car)

The theory test itself is in two parts, the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. Both parts are conducted using a computer. You must pass both parts to be successful.

In the multiple choice part you will be asked 35 questions. The pass mark is 30 out of 35.

In the hazard perception test you will be shown a series of 14 video clips featuring every day road scenes. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard (one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.) You respond to the hazards by clicking the mouse button.

The maximum score for each hazard is 5 and the pass mark is 44 out of 75.

It is not necessary to pass the theory test before starting driving lessons. Indeed it would be to your advantage to start taking lessons before applying for the theory test as the knowledge you gain from the practical training will be very much to your advantage.

Astcote Driving School will ensure you are fully prepared for both tests.
